Systemic Couples Coaching
In couples coaching, we usually work according to Systemic Psychology. In the case of that, in addition to working with the couple together, we see that it is necessary to address a specific issue or emotional blockage in one (or both of them) and do it individually, then we also do so. Unresolved emotional conflicts in one or both of the partners may be hindering the proper functioning or harmony in the relationship. Some of these blocks may include unresolved traumatic experiences from childhood or adolescence, lack of self-esteem or self-worth, etc.
Why do we call it couples coaching and not couples therapy?
In psychotherapy, psychological dysfunctions that are considered as illnesses are treated. In coaching, we address psychological problems or conflicts without categorizing them as illnesses . So far, does not exist a illness and there is no recognized ”illness of couples”.
In the book of classification of diseases (ICD-10, among others), there is no recognized illness of couples, that is why there is no specific code for a couple’s illness, which is why the term “couples therapy” doesn’t make sense.
Couples are not sick; individuals may be. That is why a couple do not need a therapy since in a couple coaching no desease is treated.
Some common issues in couples that we address are
- Sexual problems (different perspectives on sexuality, lack of desire, etc.)
- Differences in personal values
- Communication difficulties
- Age differences
- Cultural differences
- Blended families. (Patchwork families)
- Illness within the couple or in either partner's family (e.g., one partner's parent's illness)
- Differences in parenting approach
- Emotional dependency or codependency between partners (closeness and distance, freedom, boundaries, among others)
- Infidelity or strong desire for extramarital relations (not communicated).
- Separation, divorce
- Mundane routines, boredom
- Division of responsibilities
- And many others
If you believe that one or several of these problems are affecting your relationship and your partner is not willing to work on them, we can also assist you.
As mentioned earlier, when there are changes in one member of a system (in this case, a couple), the rest of the system is influenced by this change. Apart from this, you will work towards finding tranquility and well-being within you inside the situation you are in, assuming you decide to stay in that situation.
In systemic therapy, you always decide what is best for you, and if you are unsure, we can help you decide, but the final decision is yours, and whatever may be your decision, we will asist you in the archivemet of your goalds, always when it does not compromise your health and is legal of course.
The duration can be adjusted to the couple’s needs and possibilities
Couples Group Sessions
Here, we address couples’ conflicts within a group setting.
This approach is highly constructive, as it can provide a broader perspective on an individual level, as well on a couple level and get new ideas on possible solutions.
The group operates under certain rules of conduct, such as
- Confidentiality: Nothing discussed in the group should be shared outside the group.
- Neutrality: Giving perspectives as neutral as possible.
- Non-judgment: Avoiding value judgments about others.
- Respect: Respecting others' words and not interrupting them
- Not using the group to communicate things to your partner that you are not able to say privately
If couples group sessions interest you, please contact me. All group rules will be provided after our initial call, and both partners should sign them before attending a group session.
